Lloyd Center Venue Naming Exploration

Prepared by Think Joule

Thank you for taking a moment to get to know us. We are Think Joule, a Portland-based creative agency specializing in naming, branding, and positioning for real estate projects. We bring experience across multifamily, mixed-use, commercial, and industrial developments—here in Portland and beyond.

We’re excited to share our approach and a few naming directions we’ve explored for the new music venue. Please enjoy reviewing the concepts and our thinking behind each.

Hello!

Our Approach

When we take on a naming project, we start by diving into location and place—its culture, history, and what makes it unique. In Portland especially, places become part of the city’s identity, and audiences take real pride in spaces that feel rooted here. With that in mind, we look closely at what’s already out there, what local people can connect with, and the qualities that will make your project stand out as a new cultural anchor.

A name is more than just a word—it’s something that sparks emotion and meaning. Our goal is to make sure that spark is rooted in strategy. Great names have layers: they start with associations, then grow their meaning over time through experiences, programming, and the stories you tell around them.

How We Think About Naming

Strategic
Does the name reflect what makes the project special?

Layers of Meaning
Does it carry a story that can grow with the brand?

Authentic/Litmus Test
Does it feel natural to say and flow in the way people actually talk?

Ownable
Is it available to use without conflict?

Memorable & Distinctive
Does it rise above the noise in its category and stick in people's minds?

Flexible/Extendable
Can it work across events, media, and the physical space itself?

How We Think About Your Project

Every naming project starts with the core criteria above, and for this venue, we also consider goals specific to the Lloyd Development project and the culture of Portland. Based on what we have read about the space, its scale, and its cultural role, we’re looking at names that support these five guiding principles:

Experiential – Reflect the world-class experience fans will have inside, from sound and sight lines to artist engagement.

Catalytic – Support a new legacy for Portland’s music scene and help the venue act as a cultural game-changer.

Destination – Signal that this is a must-visit location for regional and national audiences.

Placemaking / Civic Identity – Connect the venue to Portland and Multnomah County while standing out as a cultural landmark.

Flexible / Extendable – Work across programming, events, marketing, and the built environment, supporting long-term activation.

Naming Directions

Below are four naming directions we explored for the venue. Each is framed as a direction, not just a word, so you can see the thinking behind it:

A successful venue name has to do three things simultaneously:

1. Belong to the City

2. Belong to the Artists

3. Belong to the Audiences

It must also be memorable, durable and pass the litmus test— becoming conversational shorthand. You have to want to say:

See you at ___ tonight!

Lumah

A confident, locally-rooted name that blends Portland geography, history, and character

Lumah is a subtle amalgamation of Lumination / Lloyd / Multnomah, giving the venue a civic connection without being literal or institutional.

Maximillian

A confident civic name rooted in place

A venue name with presence and permanence. Referencing the nearby MAX line while elevating the tone beyond infrastructure language, Maximillian gives the venue architectural scale and personality from opening day.

Ambrose

A sophisticated, evocative name inspired by amber lighting and Portland’s City of Roses

Ambrose signals a venue that is extraordinary, memorable, and transformative. Drawing on Ambrose—immortal, divine, imperishable—it positions the venue as a cultural landmark where every performance feels unforgettable.

The Verb

A kinetic, action-oriented name capturing the energy of live performance

The Verb positions the venue as a hub of activity where artists and audiences actively participate in the creation of Portland’s music scene.

We would love the opportunity to discuss these names with you, or conduct a broader search.

The naming directions shared here are conceptual and proprietary to Think Joule and are intended for discussion purposes only. Use or development of these names would occur as part of a formal engagement.
